“One who fears is not yet perfect in love.”
Words from today’s First Reading, the First Letter of John.
When I was a child, I never understood Yoda’s words:
“Fear is the path to the dark side.
Fear leads to anger.
Anger leads to hate.
Hate leads to suffering.”
I just wanted Luke to kill Darth Vader.
Now, I get it.
We live in a fearful society.
The media stokes fear.
Politicians run on platforms of fear.
It’s always in someone’s best interest that we’re afraid.
Fear gets clicks.
Fear gets views.
Fear gets votes.
Fear isn’t the only thing that drives out love. And it isn’t necessarily sinful, but where there is fear, there is not perfect love.
Fear keeps us from breaking through the awkward silence between strangers.
Fear stifles our voice.
Fear prevents us from serving others.
Fear leads to secrecy and coverups.
Fear leads to arms.
Fear leads to death.
Fear leads to walls.
We all have fears.
Some are appropriate, but many are not, and they get in the way of our purpose on this planet – to make room for love.
Let love win today.
